Tο Φινλανδικό Iνστιτούτο Aθηνών ιδρύθηκε το 1984 και είναι το δεύτερο, κατά σειρά παλαιότητας, Φινλανδικό Iνστιτούτο στο εξωτερικό. Πρόκειται για αρχαιολογική σχολή με κύριο σκοπό την μελέτη της ελληνικής αρχαιολογίας, της ιστορίας, της γλώσσας και του ελληνικού πολιτισμού γενικότερα από την αρχαιότητα ως τις μέρες μας.

On 4 May 2023 the Toxic Crimes Project (Faculty of Law, University of Helsinki), the Athens Public International Law Center (Athens PIL) Law School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Finnish Institute at Athens (FIA) organized an international workshop ‘Protection of the Environment in Armed Conflicts’ to discuss the legal, historical and practical aspects of environmental protection during armed conflicts from ancient to contemporary contexts. The event gathered a group of speakers representing a wide range of different fields of specialization. The Finnish Institute at Athens organized an international workshop ‘Markers of Northernness in Greek Ethnography and Geography’ on 10-11 December 2022. The workshop gathered a range of scholars to present on diverse themes of ancient ethnography and geography, and to discuss the parameters of the Greek perceptions of ‘northernness’ from a variety of perspectives. The programme seeked to delve into the elements that made the North and the northerners stand out as an entity or commonality in the Greek thinking from Homer to Late Antiquity and Byzantium, as well as to bring the different aspects of the septentriographic tradition into a fuller conversation with each other. This recording includes the following lectures: - Antti Lampinen, opening of the workshop - Serena Bianchetti, ‘The Insular North: a Long-Unknown Reality‘ - Gościwit Malinowski, ‘European North Before the Celts and the Scythians‘ The workshop is closely connected to the institute’s long-standing and ongoing research interest in the interactions between Nordic regions and the Mediterranean, as well as the Assistant Director Antti Lampinen’s own current research project on ancient ethnography. 17 May 2023 marked the 38th Annual Meeting for the Finnish Institute at Athens. Director of Institute, Dr. Petra Pakkanen presented the wide range of activities of the Institute over the reporting period. We had the great pleasure to hear Edinburgh University Professor Judith M. Barringer's insightful lecture entitled "The Workings of Treasuries in Greek Sanctuaries".
