Abstract:

In 2006 Sir John Boardman writes: ”Down to about 700 BC ”neo-Hittite” princelings in
Syria and Cilicia fostered styles in architecture, sculpture and decoration which were
fuel to the Greek orientalizing revolution to a degree unrivalled by any other source”.
The debt of early Greek culture on North Syria is thus acknowledged by Classical scholars
but so far the origins of the Greek practice of setting up stone monuments with sculpture
and inscriptions remain in dispute. This paper studies and compares the fragmented
evidence and asks if early Greeks adopted a North Syrian concept of combined textual and
visual message, especially for their funerary monuments.
